Celebrating the magic and majesty of Pelé, one of the sport’s greatest ever players, the legacy of ‘the king of football’ and Brazil’s all-time record goalscorer is set to be documented as part of a tribute screened on Warner Bros. Discovery’s channels and platforms.

With one of the greatest impacts on the game of any player ever to have graced the field, Pelé’s triumphs, including winning an unmatched three FIFA World Cup titles, have already immortalised him in football’s hall of fame in tandem with his mesmerising playing style and prolific goal scoring exploits. His achievements surpass his sport and new and old fans alike can witness the trailblazing flair that revolutionised football and gave birth to ‘the beautiful game’ moniker through a new documentary titled ‘Pelé: Long Live the King’.

Warner Bros. Discovery will bring one 24-minute documentary and ten short-form features produced by Inverleigh to the widest possible audience including viewers in 50 markets in Europe in addition to Asian and Indian subcontinent territories where Eurosport is available. 

The content will be available across Warner Bros. Discovery’s full suite of sports channels and streaming platforms including discovery+*, Eurosport and the Eurosport App as well as BT Sport viewers in the UK. The tribute will premiere on Eurosport 1 on Wednesday 4 January at 20:00 GMT (21:00 CET) with on-demand streaming from this time.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento or simply Pelé is widely credited as being the greatest footballer of all-time after learning his trade on the streets of São Paulo in Brazil. He is the only player to have won three FIFA World Cups including his first at just 17-years-old when he became the youngest ever player to score a World Cup hattrick before contributing a further two goals in the final in 1958 in Sweden. His goal tally for Brazil (77) remains a joint record and his overall tally of 1,283 goals in 1,367 games including friendlies and exhibition matches underlines his truly global appeal and status as the most prolific and popular player of his generation.

After setting title winning and goal scoring records at boyhood club Santos in Brazil, Pelé broke new boundaries by bringing the beautiful game to the USA when he joined New York Cosmos in 1975 to spearhead a new North American soccer revolution. In retirement he continued to blaze the trail for the sport and was named the International Olympic Committee’s Athlete of the Century and FIFA’s joint Player of the Century as well as undertaking charity work in his role as UNESCO ambassador for the United Nations.
