Eurosport and TNT Sports announce a new original documentary format will premiere this week that goes inside the body and mind of superstars from the world of sport to reveal the science behind the success of the greatest athletes of all-time.
The first film centres on record five-time Tour de France champion, Tadej Pogačar. Featuring new interviews with the supreme Slovenian rider, his parents, teammates, sports scientists and luminaries from the world of cycling, the 45-minute film titled Anatomy of a G.O.A.T. decodes the most dominant era in road cycling.
Premiering on Saturday 7 November, cycling fans across Europe can watch on Eurosport 2 from 13:50 CET while fans in the UK and Ireland can tune in on TNT Sports 1 from 15:15 GMT. HBO Max* will also offer on-demand streaming for subscribers across Europe and in the US from 7 November.
At just 28, Pogačar already boasts arguably the most impressive palmarès ever achieved in the sport. The Slovenian sensation has already amassed well over 100 UCI-ranked pro wins including 13 Monuments, two Road World Championship titles, the Giro d’Italia and this summer he made history by equalling the record for the most Tour de France titles by winning his fifth yellow jersey.
Built on never-before-seen data and analysis from WHOOP alongside expert testimony, with every statistic verified and brought to life through original graphic design, the documentary is split into five chapters each exploring a different facet of why Pogačar is a cut above the competition in a golden era of cycling.
The film includes a fresh interview with Tadej Pogačar alongside contributions from a catalogue of cycling’s greatest champions and those closest to him:
- Mirko Pogačar and Marjeta Pogačar – Tadej Pogačar's parents
- Eddy Merckx – 11-time Grand Tour winner including five Tour de France titles
- Alberto Contador – seven-time Grand Tour winner and Eurosport/TNT Sports expert
- Geraint Thomas – 2018 Tour de France winner
- Matteo Trentin – 2018 European Road Race champion and former teammate
- Iñigo San Millán – former coach and leading exercise physiologist
- Jean-Benoît Morin - sport scientist
- Kristen Holmes - WHOOP VP of Performance Science
- Matt Stephens – TNT Sports presenter
Speaking for Anatomy of a G.O.A.T., selected quotes include:
Tadej Pogačar said: “As long as you enjoy doing this sport, the results will come. Once you stop having fun, you need to find something else that will make you happy.”
“In very hard moments, you need to realise: ‘I’m here because I did all the preparation before, I sacrificed everything to be here.’ You cannot give up. You need to push through, because after a bad moment, there are always better moments.”
Eddy Merckx said: “He's bringing back a kind of cycling we had forgotten. He is now above me.”
Alberto Contador said: “I believe Tadej Pogačar is the best cyclist of all-time. Tadej wants to win everything. I think he wants to win as many Monuments as he can, as many Tour de France titles as he can, as many World Championships as he can, and as many Tour stages as he can.
“If you think about it, it’s very hard to find an athlete in any other discipline across history who is so much better than their rivals. I was thinking about it and I thought, ‘Usain Bolt.’ But of course, Tadej Pogačar is like that in every race he competes in from February to October.”
Geraint Thomas said: “There was one time I was racing with Pog in Liège doing like over 400 watts easily. He came up to me and just started having a chat. And I was just a bit like, ‘mate, I can't really talk right now - I need to focus on just getting up this climb as best as possible.’ But he has another gear or two than me, that's for sure.”
