John McEnroe, Eurosport tennis expert and seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, previews the favourites for Roland-Garros in 2023.
The men's singles favourites:
I would say that it would be like a tie between Alcaraz and Novak. That's what I would say. I would put them as the top two, and they’re pretty much the same.
We're approaching obviously the end of an era. I mean, this has been going on for 15 years, if not longer, so it's unbelievable, but everything at some point ends.
Novak is 36 now. He seems to be an incredible that for the most part, his body still seems to be able to do what he wants. At some point, you think in the near future that's going to change? It's just a question of how long can you keep going so that's why you're seeing young guys, finally it's taken almost a generation and skipped like all these people that didn't win much.
The women's singles favourites:
My favourite is Swiatek, I think that on clay, she's just a step above everyone. But I think that Sabalenka and Rybakina can blow her off the court they are such big hitters, big server, particularly, Rybakina. I don't know if you can do that long enough, but it is two out of three as opposed to the best of five. I think those type of players can cause problems, but I would still pick Swiatek.
We're hoping that like Coco Gauff breaks through, I think that would be great for tennis and American tennis. We need some inspiration from our players as well. If we got Coco Gauff, Sabalenka and Swiatek and Rybakina and they were all playing well, that would be even better. It appears those three are going to be running the game for a while.
The new the young bucks and finally started to emerge, but you have to wait and see if they're mentally ready to, Alcaraz proved the wasn't the open now you got to see if Rune is capable of like making that step to win something like this. But right now, I would say Alcaraz would be the slight favourite to win this.
