HOOGLAND AND MARCHANT AMONG 13 UCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDALLISTS QUALIFIED FOR THE 2024 UCI TRACK CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

24 October 2024

  • An additional, and final group, of 13 athletes qualified for the 2024 UCI Track Champions League by securing top-three results at the 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championships in Ballerup, Denmark.
  • All 54 qualified riders, based on their 2024 season performances, will now be consulted to confirm their participation.
  • A roll-down system, along with wild card selections designed to recognize exceptional talent and promote diversity, will be used to finalize the entry list, which will be announced soon.

Newly crowned UCI Track World Champions Jeffrey Hoogland (Netherlands) and Katy Marchant (Great Britain) are part of a 13-strong group of athletes who have qualified for the 2024 UCI Track Champions League, based on their results in the 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championships.

Hoogland, who was part of the Netherland’s Olympic and UCI World Championships-winning men’s sprint team, secured his place with a silver medal behind compatriot Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands) in the men’s sprint. Marchant meanwhile earned her spot with a bronze medal in the women’s keirin – her second podium in Ballerup, following the Olympic Games and UCI Track World Championships double alongside Emma Finucane (Great Britain) and Sophie Capewell (Great Britain) in the women’s team sprint.

The pair are joined by other medallists, including the new UCI World Champions, Danish Tobias Hansen (elimination race), and Belgian Lindsay de Vylder (omnium) as well as the men’s keirin silver medallist Israeli Mikhail Yakovlev.

All 13 have officially qualified thanks to their top-three results at the 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championships and join a stellar list of riders already qualified for the 2024 season.

Prior to the 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championships, 41 riders had secured their places and are guaranteed spots if they choose to compete, including 2023 UCI Track Champions League overall winners: Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand), Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands), Dylan Bibic (Canada), and Katie Archibald (Great Britain).

Olympic gold medallist Emma Finucane (Great Britain) was also part of the first 41 qualified, as was Matthew Richardson (Great Britain), who wasn’t competing in Denmark after making a significant career move by joining Great Britain’s team.

The new riders and their qualifying performances are:

Jeffrey Hoogland (NED), silver medal in men’s sprint.
Mina Sato (JAP), gold medal in women’s keirin and bronze medal in women’s sprint.
Katy Marchant (GBR), bronze medal in women’s keirin.
Kento Yamasaki (JAP), gold medal in men’s keirin.
Mikhail Yakovlev (ISR), silver medal in men’s keirin.
Kevin Quintero (COL), bronze medal in men’s keirin.
Lindsay de Vylder (BEL), gold in men’s omnium
Simone Consonni (ITA), silver in men’s omnium
Yanne Dorenbos (NED), bronze in men’s omnium
Tobias Hansen (DEN), gold in men’s elimination and silver in men’s scratch
Clément Petit (FRA), bronze in men’s scratch
Lorena Wiebes (NED), gold in women’s scratch
Lotte Kopecky (BEL), silver in women’s elimination

Chris Ball, Vice President of Cycling Events at Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe, stated: “The 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championship is one of the pinnacles of track cycling, alongside the Olympic Games, and it’s only right that medallists are honoured for their extraordinary efforts. A qualifying spot at the 2024 UCI Track Champions League is a worthy reward for their fantastic performances in Denmark and our five-round series will give fans even more chances to see the world’s best track cyclists battle it out on the boards of Europe.”

The 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championships marked the final opportunity for riders to qualify automatically for the 2024 UCI Track Champions League. The 54 qualified riders will now be consulted to confirm their participation. A roll down system, alongside a wild card selection aimed at recognizing exceptional talent and promoting diversity will be used to finalise the entry list, which will be announced soon.

ONE-MONTH COUNTDOWN
While the adrenaline from last week’s 2024 Tissot UCI Track World Championship might only just be subsiding, it is now only a month before the world’s best track cyclists will be duking it out once more at the Vélodrome National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Paris, France. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games venue will host the opening round on November 23, before the series heads to Omnisport Apeldoorn, Netherlands (November 29-30) and Lee Valley Velodrome, London, Great Britain (December 6-7). While the Grand Finale in London has been sold out for weeks, tickets are still available for the other rounds.
