EUROSPORT'S SCHMITT AND HANNAWALD ASSESS THE IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN ON WINTER SPORTS
Speaking exclusively to Eurosport Germany, ski jumping experts Martin Schmitt and Sven Hannawald discuss the effect the coronavirus has had on winter sports.
Martin Schmitt on the current situation regarding the coronavirus pandemic
The overall situation has affected everyone, even unexpectedly - especially to this extent. Nobody could have imagined this three or four months ago. But that is the situation. Winter sports have also been affected and the season was understandably interrupted. Because it's so warm outside, you don't think so much about winter sports and the past season, but of course, like everyone else, I have certain worries about how things will develop.
Sven Hannawald on the current situation regarding the coronavirus pandemic
At the beginning, some people thought it was some kind of flu and are now surprised at how the situation has developed. This is a situation that you have to live with now. I believe that there will be a new, good and better way afterwards. In three, four or five weeks, people will be happy that they can finally meet again together and notice that you can spend more beautiful and more social times together than being alone. Maybe companies and firms will also strive for a different philosophy, work more forward-looking and put certain things aside.
Martin Schmitt on the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the preparation of ski jumpers
Everybody controls the transition period a little bit differently. Often the athletes train a bit more in the athletics area and then the usual annual holiday follows. That is of course not the case. Basically, you can do a lot of training on your own at the moment, because there is no jump training to do and therefore you don't have to rely on a ski jump. As a ski jumper, you can do the athletics program on your own. Everyone is prepared differently, of course. One has a weight room in the basement and can do everything. On the other hand, it is difficult to train at the Olympic base at the moment. But I think that the jumpers in the World Cup are not facing the biggest problem right now. Because they know what they have to do and how they can get fit. Only the holidays are cancelled for now.
