EUROSPORT GERMANY ANNOUNCE STAR RECRUITS FOR BUNDESLIGA COVERAGE
Eurosport today announced two of the biggest signings of the January transfer window so far with former German football captain Matthias Sammer and respected presenter Jan Henkel joining the sports broadcaster.
Sammer and Henkel will front Eurosport Germany’s coverage of the Bundesliga from the 2017/18 season.
Sammer, who captained his country to a memorable triumph at Euro ’96, won 23 caps for East Germany and a further 51 caps for Germany in an illustrious 15-year career. Renowned presenter Henkel, meanwhile, links up with Eurosport after 16 successful years at Sky Germany where he led coverage for the Bundesliga and Champions League.
From August, Eurosport will broadcast 40 Bundesliga matches throughout the season to German-speaking countries exclusively live on its pay TV platforms, including all Friday night matches and the best matches from one of the most exciting leagues in the world on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights. Eurosport will also show the annual German Supercup clash and all of the nerve-jangling end of season relegation play-off action.
All live matches throughout the season will be available for fans to watch on Eurosport 2 and via the Eurosport Player – Eurosport’s on-demand service.
In June, Eurosport announced it would broadcast the Bundesliga in Germany for four years starting from the 2017/18 season, highlighting its commitment to showcasing locally relevant, premium content.
Matthias Sammer said: “I am already looking forward to the next Bundesliga season. Together with Jan [Henkel] we want to deliver insightful analysis while also entertaining the viewers. I was very lucky to have learned and achieved so much during my career and I want to share as many of these experiences with Eurosport viewers all of the way through the 2017/18 Bundesliga season.”
Jan Henkel added: “I cannot wait to work with someone with someone who has the status of Matthias [Sammer]. From August, I want us to be the first point of contact for football fans every Friday throughout the Bundesliga season. We will kick off each weekend. For me personally, it’s also an exciting opportunity to shape Eurosport’s coverage of the Bundesliga in Germany.”
Susanne Aigner-Drews said: “The Bundesliga is one of our showcase competitions on Eurosport and we want to deliver a premium product to viewers which includes a world-class production and engaging personalities. With Matthias Sammer, we have secured one of the most opinionated – and respected – experts in German football. There can be little doubt that when he speaks, other listen. He is able to break down and analyse a match like no other.
“We are also excited to reveal that Jan [Henkel] will be joining the Eurosport family. Jan is someone who has extensive experience working on the Bundesliga over many years and he has excellent contacts within the game. With Jan and Matthias on board, we have two personalities who are on the same wavelength – both professionally and personally – who will represent Eurosport’s coverage of the Bundesliga in the best way possible.”
