EUROPEAN STARS DRIVE EUROSPORT'S AUSTRALIAN OPEN RATINGS SUCCESS
The performances of Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki have helped Eurosport record impressive ratings for the first ten days of the 2018 Australian Open*.
With Wozniacki and Halep in imperious form in Melbourne, Eurosport in Denmark (+64%) and Romania (+70%) are among numerous markets to have shown a significant growth in audience numbers versus 2017. Casper Ruud’s first victory in a Grand Slam match helped Eurosport in Norway post a 117% increase versus 2017, while Fabio Fognini’s run to the fourth round saw Eurosport Italy record 16% growth compared to last year.
Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton said: “The performance of local European heroes during this year’s Australian Open married with our own unrivalled localised production offering has proved a winner, with more fans tuning in to watch the tournament than ever before.
“Eurosport continues to buck the trend when it comes to consumer demand for live sport. If the product is of the quality fans expect and rightly deserve, they will tune in and watch. We’re looking forward to a successful last few days of the tournament where fans will watch four European players – Wozniacki, Halep, Marin Cilic and Roger Federer – go toe-to-toe before our eyes live on Eurosport.”
Following a record-breaking showing at the 2017 edition of the Australian Open, the Eurosport network once again has raised the bar with a 1% increase in viewers across Europe compared with the same stage 12 months ago. The figures represent a staggering 27% increase after the first 10 days versus the 2016 tournament.
The strong year-on-year figures have been helped by on-site teams from Germany, UK, France and Russia producing localised programming direct from Melbourne. World-class experts – from Boris Becker to John McEnroe, Mats Wilander to Barbara Schett and Patrick Mouratoglou – coach of Serena Williams – to Henri Leconte – playing key roles in Eurosport’s programming providing in-depth analysis and exclusive insights to fans across Europe throughout the tournament.
Eurosport will broadcast 350 hours of live coverage during the Australian Open with viewers able to watch every men’s or women’s match throughout the two weeks on TV, online, mobile and OTT devices.
