DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS CONCLUDES TWENTIETH OLYMPIC GAMES FREE-TO-AIR PARTNERSHIP WITH NEW AGREEMENTS IN ARMENIA AND KOSOVO

LONDON – May 11, 2017 – The agreement of Discovery Communications’ twentieth free-to-air broadcast partnership has underlined the rapid progress the new Home of the Olympics is making in the delivery of the ultimate Games experience in Europe.  The new partnerships with Armenian Public TV and Radio Televizioni i Kosovës (RTK) along with existing agreements with national broadcasters across Europe are part of Discovery’s broad strategy to share the Games with more people, on more screens, than ever before.

The partnerships complement an approach which will see Eurosport redefine the Olympic Games viewer experience, covering every moment, from every angle and connecting every one - engaging millions of people through all the action, innovative technologies and the best country-specific sports talent.

The agreements cover free-to-air audio-visual rights for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in Armenia and Kosovo respectively. Within each specific territory, Discovery Communications has sub-licensed to Armenian Public TV and Radio Televizioni i Kosovës (RTK) exclusive free-to-air audio visual rights for PyeongChang 2018 and Tokyo 2020.  The national free-to-air broadcasters will hold select digital rights for the content they broadcast on their linear television channels and select clip rights following the live events.  Eurosport maintains rights to air every moment on pay-TV and through its digital and mobile services.

In separate agreements, new partnerships have been forged with the market leading radio services in Poland and Sweden, Polish Radio and Swedish Radio, to further spread the reach and accessibility of the Games.  Discovery has sublicensed non-exclusive radio rights, including digital simulcast via Internet and mobile, for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Peter Hutton, CEO of Eurosport, said: “The signing of Discovery’s twentieth national broadcaster partnership for the Olympic Games is a mark of our progress and commitment to ensuring the Olympic Games reaches more people, on more screens, than ever before.

“The range and availability of Olympic Games coverage across Europe will be unprecedented for PyeongChang 2018, with every moment available on all screens.  Our collaboration with free-to-air partners and offer to mobile operators shows how we are seeking and securing innovative partnerships to maximize engagement around the Games,” he added.

Discovery has recently unveiled its pioneering ‘Official Mobile Broadcaster’ product. The first-of-its-kind Olympic Games partnership offers an exclusive opportunity for mobile operators, with the chance to co-brand with the Olympic Rings and offer its customers anytime access to all the action.  The initiative also supports Discovery’s goal to bring the Games to more people on more screens than ever before, alongside free-to-air coverage on Discovery-owned platforms in Germany, Norway and Sweden, free-to-air national broadcaster partners and Eurosport’s all-screen coverage of every moment on TV and the Eurosport Player.

Discovery Communications holds the exclusive multimedia rights for 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018 through the 2024 Olympic Games, announced with the International Olympic Committee in June 2015.  It has now concluded twenty Olympic Games sublicensing agreements, following partnership deals with national broadcasters in Austria (ORF), Belarus (Belarus National State Broadcasting), Croatia (HRT), the Czech Republic (Ceska Televize), Estonia (Eesti Meedia), Finland (YLE), Georgia (Georgian Public Broadcasting), Hungary (MTVA), Iceland (RÚV), Ireland (RTE), Latvia (Latvijas Televīzija), Lithuania (Lietuvos Olimpinis Fondas), Netherlands (NOS), Poland (Telewizja Polska), Slovenia (RTV Slovenija), Slovakia (RTVS), Switzerland (SRG SSR) and UK (BBC).
