7 February 2017 - Last updated 7 May 2020

Pyeongchang 2018

Discovery Communications and Eurosport are marking one year to go until PyeongChang 2018 by unveiling our all screen editorial strategy leading up to and including the Olympic Winter Games. Across all screens and services, Eurosport commits to go further than ever before to deliver the “Ultimate Olympic Games Viewer Experience” with every moment, from every angle and connecting everyone.

Leveraging Eurosport’s unrivalled expertise in covering Olympic sports all year long, Discovery will bring the Olympic Games to more people across more screens than ever before through the Eurosport pay-TV channels and digital services in 50 markets. In addition, the company’s broad-reaching free-to-air channels in Sweden (including Kanal 5), Norway (including TV Norge) and Germany (Eurosport 1 and DMAX) will be the exclusive Home of the Olympic Games, and on which every moment of the action will be powered by Eurosport.

For the Olympic Winter Games, Eurosport will broadcast more than 100 events live and on demand, providing access on any device, at any time. It will make PyeongChang 2018 the most digital Olympic Games across Europe, capturing every moment of action for viewers, as well as creating further mass engagement on Discovery-owned digital sites (including Eurosport.com) and social media platforms.

JB Perrette, Discovery Networks International President and CEO, said: “Our commitment to redefine the Olympic Games viewer experience and drive more engagement for all people across Europe is a bold statement that we intend to meet and exceed. As a purpose-driven company, Discovery shares many of the values represented by the Olympic Games, and we are excited to tell these riveting stories of human ambition, sacrifice and achievement.

“Discovery and Eurosport will continue to live up to our disruptor status within the industry and create the seat that doesn’t exist for the Olympic Games, covering every moment, from every angle and connecting everyone.”

“As the countdown to PyeongChang begins, we are off to a strong start through our own expertise and by working with the best partners in Europe who share our vision.”

Peter Hutton, Eurosport CEO, said: “We will offer fans something truly different, the chance to follow every local hero, every sport and every moment that matters to them. We are pleased to reveal the editorial strategy that will bring this to life, and allows us to make PyeongChang 2018 the first digital Games across Europe.

“Offering every moment of the Olympic Games is essential given the expectation of fans and Eurosport’s commitment to live sport. A mark of our ambition is that we will go even further than any previous broadcaster through exclusive on-site access and a content strategy formed around the pillars of Live, Innovation, Human and Atmosphere.”

All Screen Editorial Strategy: Year Round Olympic Storytelling

Leading up to and during the Games, Eurosport’s year-round Olympic content will span long and short form storytelling and will be centered around:

 Live: Unrivalled coverage featuring the biggest and every moment of the Games and Olympic sports all-year-round.

 Innovation: Using the latest technology, such as VR and augmented reality to engage new and younger audiences.

 Human: New immersive storytelling featuring the biggest personalities and experts to take fans even closer to their local heroes and the people around them.

 Atmosphere: With PyeongChang possibly a new destination for some fans, dedicated content will look to share experiences of South Korean culture.

The announcement was made at the start of the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, which Eurosport shows to fans across Europe. The Championships is the latest milestone in Eurosport’s year-round Olympic Games storytelling, following every step of the athletes' journeys on the road to PyeongChang 2018.

The upcoming PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will be Eurosport’s first as the new Home of the Olympics in Europe. Discovery Communications holds the exclusive multimedia rights for 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018 through to the 2024 Olympic Games, announced with the International Olympic Committee in June 2015.

ENDS.
