Eurosport tennis expert and 18-time Grand Slam singles winner Chris Evert previews Roland-Garros 2023.
The men's singles favourites:
Alcaraz is just primed for this title. He has to stay healthy, because he's been playing a lot. Like everybody else jumps on the bandwagon when you talk about Carlos because he's phenomenal. And I feel like I feel like we've never seen this versatile player with so much passion and so much hunger in such a long time.
The guy has it all. He's got the athleticism, he's got the skill set, he's, he knows defence, he knows offence, he moves. Unbelievable. He has no weaknesses. He's just got to me if he keeps himself healthy and hungry then I think the title is his. Novak and Carlos would be a great match.
Saying that, you know, I think there's some outsiders – Jannik Sinner has come a long way. I think that working with Darren Cahill has really made him more professional. It's made him stronger physically. And he has gone toe to toe with Carlos Alcaraz a few times.
I've been impressed with Holger Rune. Lately, I think he's dangerous. I don't think he's going to win the tournament, but I think he could knock out a top player. Of course, he's already number seven right now, but I think, he's just physically strong and he has a lot of determination.
The women's singles favourites:
I think Iga Swiatek is the favourite, just after watching her the last few weeks, I liked the way she's pacing herself. She didn't play Miami, she didn't play the Billie Jean King Cup. She's being smart about her training, and pacing herself and her rest. She just looks primed. Also, clay is her best surface and is the first one she won. I think she's only lost one match on clay since last year, if I'm not mistaken.
You have to have a great defence and a great defence and offence and she has both - she just takes the ball out of your hand. She dictates every point because she moves in and hits the ball early. She runs down everything, she knows the right shot to hit, depending on her positioning in the court. I think that one area she can improve is her serve and I think if anyone is to beat her they've got jumped on her second serve.
